Refresh Your Look This Spring With Eyelid Surgery

Refresh Your Look This Spring With Eyelid Surgery

When you look in the mirror, are you happy with your reflection? As the seasons change, many people think about ways to refresh their appearance so they look more like themselves.

Injectables like Botox® and fillers can address wrinkles and sagging jowls, but puffy or tired-looking eyelids can be more challenging to manage. That’s where eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty comes in. This cosmetic procedure has a proven track record and can help give you a more youthful look.

At Eye Surgeons Associates, which serves patients in Canton, Livonia, and Monroe, Michigan, our team of ophthalmologists regularly performs eyelid surgery. Read on to discover how it works, its benefits, and what to expect during recovery. By the time you’re finished, you’ll be ready to decide if eyelid surgery is right for you.

What is eyelid surgery?

Eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure that removes or repositions fat, excess skin, and sometimes muscle from your upper or lower eyelids.

This relatively quick, effective procedure can help improve your peripheral (or side) vision and minimize the appearance of common cosmetic concerns, including droopy eyelids, sagging eyelids, or puffy under-eye bags.

Because it’s done on an outpatient basis, many people can return to their daily routine within just a few days, and it carries a generally low risk of infection, swelling, or other complications.

Benefits of eyelid surgery

Eyelid surgery offers various benefits, but we typically break them up into two categories:

Cosmetic benefits

The skin of and around the eyelids is paper-thin and typically wrinkles and sags more quickly than other surrounding areas. Because blepharoplasty addresses these imperfections, many people report smoother, younger-looking eyelids, brighter eyes, and a more youthful appearance.

Functional benefits

Sometimes, drooping or sagging eyelids affect peripheral vision, making it challenging to read, drive, or perform other daily tasks. Removing excess skin and fat can help widen your line of vision and make it easier to play sports or participate in other activities you enjoy.

Since many of these issues become more noticeable when you regularly spend time outdoors, spring is the perfect time to consider eyelid surgery.

Eyelid surgery: What to expect

Eyelid surgery is an outpatient procedure that typically takes one or two hours. Before beginning the operation, we administer a local anesthetic to numb your eyelids and ensure a comfortable experience.

Once the anesthetic takes effect, we make small, precise incisions in your upper and/or lower eyelids, remove or reposition excess fat and skin, and trim any additional tissue as needed. The incisions are then closed with dissolvable sutures, and you’re moved to a recovery room for observation.

Because the effects of the anesthetic can last several hours, you’ll need someone to drive you home. Following surgery, mild bruising, inflammation, and discomfort are normal. Ice packs can help reduce swelling, and we may recommend over-the-counter or prescription medication for pain management.

Most people return to work seven to 10 days after eyelid surgery, but it may take longer for some. Follow your surgeon’s instructions closely and attend each of your scheduled follow-up appointments. Results appear natural and can last many years, especially if you closely adhere to your recovery plan.
